About Carl Birman
After graduating from Columbia College (BA 1983) and Duke Law School (JD 1987), Carl D. Birman launched a career in public service across diverse regions of New York State—including Brooklyn, White Plains, Suffolk, and Chenango Counties.
Over the years, he has brought a wealth of experience mobilizing grassroots efforts for social justice and has litigated significant legal issues before the NYS Appellate Division and the State’s highest court, the Court of Appeals.
Driven by this experience, Carl’s commitment to serving real people and achieving tangible results has led to a long list of successes both inside and outside the courtroom.
Volunteer Work
Carl was the founding Board President of the Duke Public Interest Law Foundation, which has raised millions of dollars since 1988 to fund public sector summer jobs for law students.
Beyond that, he also founded Safety, Inc.: Men & Women Against Violence, and ran the NYC Clothesline Project—an initiative supporting survivors of abuse, violence, and trauma—for five years.
In addition, he served as Chairman and Commissioner of the Mamaroneck, NY Harbor & Coastal Zone Management Commission for three years.
Transition to Private Practice
Simultaneously, all of this was accomplished while building a respected litigation practice focused on appellate advocacy, indigent criminal defense, children’s rights, and defending parents entangled in the child welfare system.
From 2009 to 2020, Carl was a certified attorney for children in Westchester County Family Court, representing young clients in complex cases involving abuse, neglect, domestic violence, and mental health challenges.
As a result, he built his private law practice on this strong foundation, dedicated to delivering real solutions for real people.
Today, with over 35 years of experience, Carl offers clients the depth, dedication, and strategic insight needed to navigate the legal system effectively.
He is a seasoned attorney who understands how to craft winning strategies tailored to each case—an advocate who knows what justice requires and how to achieve it.
